Hobart lawyer, Luke Rheinberger was elected President of the Law Society of Tasmania for a term of one year in October 2008. He is the Society’s immediate past Vice-President and is also a member of the Tasmanian Bar Association and the Australian Insurance Law Association. Mr Rheinberger is employed by Hobart law firm, Page Seager and graduated from the University of Tasmania with a combined Arts and Law Degree in 1994. After being admitted to practice in 1995, he practised initially in Launceston and joined Page Seager in 2000. Luke practices in civil litigation with a particular emphasis on building dispute resolution, personal injuries and workers’ compensation law. During his term as President, Mr Rheinberger plans to work closely with the Attorney-General and the Legal Profession Board to implement the new Legal Profession Act – the legislation based on a national model under which all lawyers will be regulated. It is understood the new Act will start in December this year. Mr Rheinberger also looks forward to guiding the Society’s focus away from that of regulating the legal profession towards providing more services and benefits to its members. Although the new Legal Profession Act changes the way the Tasmanian legal profession is regulated, it will not change the profession’s tradition of providing high quality legal services to Tasmanian consumers. Mr Rheinberger emphasized that ‘Although we are entering a time of change in the regulation of the legal profession, the Society will continue to help its members to maintain the highest levels of service to the thousands of clients assisted by the profession every week’.
