Simon was admitted to practice in 2004 after studying a combined Arts/Law degree at the University of Tasmania. His first foray into practice was as one of the specialised lawyers appointed by Tasmania Police to deal with domestic violence-related prosecutions in the Magistrate’s Court as part of the “Safe At Home” government program. Simon also appeared on general prosecution matters. In 2006 he joined the Legal Aid Commission of Tasmania, working in the family law practice. He represented a wide range of clients in parenting matters before judges of the Family Court and also in the Federal Magistrates Service. Simon also worked with parents subject to applications brought pursuant to the Children, Young Persons and their Families Act 1997 in the Magistrate’s Court. In 2008 Simon began work at the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, working first as counsel appearing to prosecute in criminal trials in the Supreme Court in Hobart and Burnie. In 2009 he began work in the specialised area of summary court prosecutions and appeals heard in the Supreme Court from decisions of lower courts. He currently continues that work, as well as provides advice to government agencies such as Workplace Standards, Tasmania Police, Health and Environment on matters of law relevant to summary court practice and procedure. He has developed a keen interest in the area. Simon has been an active member of the Young Lawyer’s Committee (Southern) of the Law Society and in 2009 was President. Simon was born, raised in and loves Hobart. He continues to live there.
