M D Schyvens

President 2007-2008

Malcolm was born in Hobart and educated at St Virgils College then attending the University of Tasmania graduating with a combined commerce/law degree in 1995.

After completing his apprenticeship with Dobson Mitchell & Allport Malcolm was admitted to practice in 1996.  In 1998 he commenced employment with Ebsworth & Ebsworth in Brisbane practising primarily in the area of native title.   Malcolm returned to Hobart in 2000 joining Jennings Elliott and was made a partner of the merged firm of Ogilvie Jennings in 2003.  He has been Managing Partner of that firm since 2004 and practises predominantly in the commercial/property fields.

Malcolm is a presiding member of the Guardianship and Administration Board and President of Cosmos Incorporated, Tasmania’s largest provider of day services for persons with an intellectual disability.

Having been elected to the Council of the Law Society in 2004, Malcolm became a member of the Executive of the Society in 2005.  He is also Chairman of the Society’s Continuing and Legal Education Committee and a Member of the Property Law Committee.

Malcolm sees the forthcoming year as a crucial time for the Society to adapt to the new legislative framework to be implemented by the Government.   These forthcoming changes will provide the Society with an opportunity to be truly supportive of its members, providing a greater level of services and benefits rather than the disciplinary functions which have consumed much of the resources of the Society in the past.

Malcolm is the current President of the Law Society of Tasmania
